UNCA Building Goes Solar
NORTH ASHEVILLE — University of North Carolina at Asheville held a ribbon cutting Thursday for its new solar panels on the roof of Overlook Residence Hall.
Over the summer, 112 panels were installed, generating 50,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
Strata Solar, the largest solar developer in North Carolina, donated the panels which are valued at more than $27,000.
Sonia Marcus, director of sustainability at the university gave News 13 an example of how much energy they'll generate.
“So when it's at peak output it can power about 300 computers, which is about the number of residents we have here at Overlook Residence Hall,” Marcus said.
Now the goal is to install an interface with information about the solar panels so students can learn more about how they're being used.
